See the Italian Frecce jets perform an air show in Imperia
Head to Liguria this weekend to feel the rush of the Frecce Tricolori jets giving an acrobatic air show to celebrate the birth of the Republic!
Top Gun fever has been spreading quickly since the premiere of “Maverick” on 24 May and for those who feel "the need... the need for speed", there is a great opportunity to feel the rush of fighter jets buzz past you in a big show by Italy’s Frecce jets. Performing for the first time in nine years, the Italian Airforce’s “Pattuglia Acrobatica” will put on quite a show of choreographed acrobatics and release the three colours of the Italian flag: green, white and red. It is sure to be an exhilarating experience!
And if that doesn't entice you enough, watch the video from the city to really get you going:
Historic Tall ship
For the ship lovers and the history buffs, the day will also feature the Amerigo Vespucci, one of the world’s most beautiful and continually active tall ships. Usually docked in La Spezia, this teaching ship for the Italian Navy is sailing to Imperia for the national festivities.
Known as the most beautiful ship in the world, the black & white beauty got the title in 1962, when the American aircraft carrier, USS Independence, saw the Amerigo Vespucci in the Mediterranean and flashed a morse-code asking who it was. When the Italians replied: “Training ship Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy,” the Americans replied: "You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”
The public will be able to visit the ship during the weekend.
How to get there
Imperia is located in the Liguria region about an hour from Nice (1.5 hours from Cannes) both by car and by train. The journey could be slightly longer by train depending on the transfer time at the Ventimiglia rail station. Rail tickets can be purchased on SNCF Connect straight through to Imperia.
Sunday 5 June will have festivities all day, including a market and ‘parco giocchi’, or amusement park for the kids, from 10 am - 6 pm in Borgo Marina. The air show will take place at 4 pm (you can also catch the practice session on Sat 4 June at 4 pm).
The best spots for watching the air show:
