Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters: 116th edition between land and sea

One of tennis’ most glamorous events, the 116th edition of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters plays up its Mediterranean setting.

From 9 - 16 April, more than 15,000 people are expected to attend the Monte-Carlo Country Club each day, proving once again that the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is a must-see event on the ATP circuit. One of the world's most prestigious tennis events, the Monte-Carlo Masters has, since 1928, announced the start of the sports season for the Principality. Similarly to the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show, throughout the tournament week, the 2-square kilometre country will swell with athletes, fans and sponsors, making the entire country live to the rhythm of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

This year, organisers have decided to change things up a bit, taking full advantage of the stunning surroundings. As revealed by the tournament’s new director, David Massey, “a new visual identity, inspired by the French Riviera and the colours of the Mediterranean, will feature on all the tournament’s material.” The exterior of the stands will be decorated in the colours of the ‘big blue’, the VIP village boxes will all face the sea and the catering areas will be extended. A seafood bar will also be launched, again with the glistening sea as a backdrop.

“The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is the most beautiful tournament on the circuit,” said David Massey. “We are incredibly lucky and we owe it to ourselves to showcase our surroundings.”

“I have had the opportunity over several decades to visit all the ATP tournaments. And I can confirm that our extraordinary site is exceptional, as much for its geographical situation, with its south-facing exposition overlooking the sea, as for the palette of colours that change over the course of the day”, stated David Massey.

New televised coverage

For the first time, three courts will be broadcast on television, on Eurosport and C8 in France. After the central court and the Princes’ court, the clay court with its retractable roof, where Monaco’s Davis Cup matches are played, will now be fitted with eight cameras to broadcast the matches from all angles.

This nouvelle is certainly pleasing to the event sponsors, including Rolex, the title sponsor, and the loyal support of prominent partners, such as BNP Paribas, Emirates, Maserati and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, among others.

Nadal, Djokovic, and Tsitsipas… The ‘Who’s Who’ of tennis!

The final list of participants for the 116th edition of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters will be revealed on 14 March, but the world’s top players are all expected to attend, starting with local Monaco resident, Novak Djokovic, the world number 1, and Rafael Nadal, who should be back to attempt a 12th victory in the principality. Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev are also expected to play. Four wild cards should be allocated. It is rumoured that Gaël Monfils might receive one, along with Monaco’s Davis Cup representatives Lucas Catarina and Valentin Vacherot.

Although it’s still a little early to confirm final attendance, the big names are registered, proving the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters continues to offer a battleground of the biggest players and also the top emerging talent. David Massey added that they are “ also counting on the presence of young players from the next generation, such as Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune and of course the reigning Master, Stéfanos Tsitsipas.”

Tickets available in person

Tickets go fast, but while 80% of the seats have already been snapped up, David Massey was keen to reassure those who have not yet booked their ‘golden ticket’ that they keep an even playing field. Every day, a handful of tickets will be released for sale directly at the Monte-Carlo Country Club ticket offices.
